Day 2 was another success even if that 5 am alarm felt entirely too early. The whole getting out of bed thing made me want to quit, but we still got up and made it happen. After all, part of doing this thing is to used to getting up at regular work time!

Run

Originally, we hadn’t planned to run today, but we decided an easy 2 mile run before we hopped on the bike would help wake us up and shake us out. Like yesterday, we ended up running a little too fast. That whole adrenaline/excitement thing gets me every time.

It was a bit cooler than yesterday and overcast again, though the sun did pop through for a minute as it rose for this beautiful sight and left us with some candy-pink clouds.

Sunrise

Transition 1

Rob pumped up his bike tires, I had half a banana, and in about 5 minutes, we were off. Our plan was to go about 18 miles.

Bike

Wow, did our rear ends hurt! I tell you what, all of you who ride consistently impress me to no end. I know you build up to it, but I could barely sit down for the first 2-3 miles.

So, that plan to go 18 miles? About 6 miles in, Rob gives me his own, “So, I had an idea…”. Since just about all the bike trails in Denver connect to each other, Rob wanted to try this loop that links our house’s path to our old apartment’s path. Guesstimated as being a 30 mile loop.

Game on.

Around mile 8, there was an 8-point buck (coincidence?) standing right in the middle of the path! It surprised us because 1) we were cursing down this hill, and 2) we hadn’t seen many other people. Rob bravely got it to move even though the thing wouldn’t give us the time of day, he was so mellow and into whatever he was eating.

The ride was beautiful, especially the parts along the new-to-us path, but by mile 29 the rain was picking up and we were more than ready to be done.

Ironman in one week - bike time

Transition 2

Similar to yesterday, we had about a 4-hour break to have a big scrambled-egg breakfast, get some work done, and rest before heading to the pool.

Swim

Again, it’s been a rainy day here, so we drove to the indoor pool and go some laps done. The swim felt harder to me today than it did yesterday, but Rob was a champ and cut 4 minutes off his time! (I added 3.)

We were both a little shaky and light-headed after our swim due to not having lunch before we headed over; it was one of those weird timing things. “Dinner” happened as soon as we got home at 4.

Victories

Getting out of bed this morning! Completing a 32 mile bike ride with only one gu and two bottles of water (not the recommended way to do this).

Grumbles

Sore bottoms! Hunger (this on Rob’s end). It takes me about 2-3 days from starting an intense workout program for the hunger to set in. Look out tomorrow, fridge.
