Hi Friends! As I’m sure you can see, the blog got a bit of a facelift. There are still a few more tweaks I need to take care of, but I was just too impatient. Let me know what you think so far, or if anything isn’t working.
Day one of Ironman in One Week is off to a good start! In case you missed it, you can read the what and why here.
Progress:
- Swim: .77 miles (50 laps) / 35:35
- Bike: 13.40 miles / 1:08:39
- Run: 4.87 miles / 45:00
I’m going to recap based on the order of events we complete each day. Like I mentioned yesterday, we are not following the typical swim-bike-run pattern.
Run
We definitely hit this run a little too fast for all the miles we have yet to do. Since it was our first event of the week, I think we were on excitement and adrenaline. The rain held off with a drizzle and only started coming down a bit harder in the last mile.
Transition 1
Ok, so it’s not a real transition, but for purposes of transparency and the recaps, I think they’re important to include. We took about 10 minutes from the end of our run to the start of our bike. I ate half a banana, we both had a Gu, Rob pumped up our bike tires, and off we went!
Bike
The sweat and drizzle kept us chilly for the first two miles! Our loop had three big hills on it, so we warmed up quick and just enjoyed the views. We took a leisurely pace on this ride and joked about only having 98.6 miles left! Both of us were pretty hungry by the last 2 miles of the ride.
Transition 2
We finished biking at 7:30 am, and didn’t start our next leg until 4 pm. So, naturally there was lunch, a snack, work, and other daily activities in the mix. It’s nice to have a long break between events.
Swim
Our plan of biking or running to the nearby outdoor pool was botched due to the pouring rain. Instead, we drove to a local indoor pool and knocked out some laps. We only needed to do about 38, but we pushed it to 50 since we were feeling good. We had the whole place to ourselves!
My problem in the pool is I can only swim 2 laps freestyle before my breathing gets off and I have to switch strokes. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to swim more efficiently?
Victories
1) First and foremost, we didn’t chicken out when we woke up to less-than-ideal weather. Second, we took our time and paced ourselves on the bike and didn’t try to beat any records.
Grumbles
My only real complainant is taking two showers in the same day. That and Rob’s Runkeeper and my GPS watch say two different distances, so we’re not sure which one to go off of.
