Foster imagination with 19 simple dramatic play ideas for young kids. There is no prep work in this pretend play and you can use materials you already have.
These past two weeks have been really good for me.
With both preschool and all our regular outing locations shut down, it has forced me to slow down and give the kids lots of time to do the activities we did not have time to do before. This includes imaginative play.

Sure, Zoey is only in preschool three mornings a week, but between school, lunch, quiet time, naps, and getting outside in the afternoons for a bit we have had very little time for crafts or different types of imaginative play in that past year.
Zoey is turning out to have the same, very vivid imagination that I had as a kid. She loves to play pretend whether she is making a sleeve of cups into a snake, playing teacher, or telling a made up story.

These 19 simple dramatic play ideas for young kids are our go to activities as they require no prep work and you can do them with the items you already have in your home.
Most of these dramatic play ideas do require some adult interaction and supervision, but they give you a creative and inventive way to play with your child.
Post Office. Use cards, envelopes, ink stamps, and a small box as a mailbox. These are not for actual mailing, but to open the next day.

Grocery Store. Using either saved boxes from your own kitchen, or food from your play kitchen, set up a little grocery store. Have your child go shopping with a grocery bag, check out, and use a play wallet to pay.
Baby. Your child can use a baby doll or stuffed animal to change diapers, dress them up, and feed them.
Story Time. Zoey loves library story time. This is her go to dramatic play activity. Set up your own story time by having your child “read”a book, play songs, and do some movement. Bonus points if your child can come up with a craft project to do as part of story time.
Restaurant. Work together to write out a menu for the restaurant and then have one person order from the menu while the other person is the chef. We love this toy kitchen for tons of dramatic play activities including this one.

Birthday Party. Throw a birthday party for one of your child’s favorite stuffed animals. Write invitations for other stuffed animals, bake a cake or cupcakes, make decorations, and sing happy birthday.
Big Box. This is an easy activity if you have a giant box laying around. Simply put it out and let them get creative.

Wash Toys. This is a good outdoor activity, but also works indoors with lots of towels underneath. Set up some soapy water buckets and drop in some toys to scrub clean. Add a toothbrush for the extra shine.
Hospital. Set up an animal hospital. You can act as the nurse or let your child play on their own. It helps to have a doctor set.
Play Doh. This works as both a sensory play and imaginative play activity. You can even make your own Play Doh if you do not have any.

Teacher. Just like with story time, set up a few stuffed animals and have your child act as the teacher. This is above and beyond Zoey’s absolute favorite pretend play activity.
Magic Wand. Decorate a popsicle stick or paint stir stick and walk around the house, or outside, casting magic spells. Bonus points for the silliest magic word you can come up with.
Dress Up. No standard dress up clothes? No problem. Pull out items from the grown-up closets for the kids to wear.
Felt Board. Staple a large piece of felt to a piece of wood. Cut out animals, houses, playground equipment, and whatever else you can think of using felt pieces in different colors. You can tell stories using the pieces you cut out.

Fire Chief. We use a toy fire engine for this as well as a dress up outfit and use phrases like, “Follow me to safety,” and “All clear!”
Figurines. Small animal figurines or mini dolls work well to play with. You can even build them houses out of blocks and Legos.
Fort or Tent. There are some super cute homemade tent options on Pinterest, or you can go the lazy route like me and use an empty closet. Add blankets, pillows, and Christmas lights. Load it with books and the kids should be good for a while.
Tea Time. Whether you have a toy tea set for your child to use or you use some cups and tea related items from your own kitchen, the kids can have an elaborate tea time.
Detective. Zoey started to want to play detective after she read this Fancy Nancy book. Now we pick things around the house that go missing and decide what clues might help us find it. There is usually a magnifying glass and flashlight involved.
My goal when it comes to dramatic play with the kids is to let them guide it. Usually Zoey asks to play one of them together, or I suggest a new one. Then, I let her lead the events of the pretending. Hopefully you will find a few of these to get really into with your child.
