Back in ‘Nam (sorry, I get a kick out of saying that), Rob and I visited a small village about four hours outside of Hanoi.
When it was time to head back to Hanoi after a night in the village, the tour organizers miscounted the number of people who needed to return and ran out of seats in the van. There was only one seat left and Rob and I decided to share it.
Perched next to the driver with one of my legs on top of Rob, we had a front row seat to Vietnamese driving skills.
Now, driving motorbikes in the city is hectic and dangerous in itself, but no one is going particularly fast due to traffic. On the narrow country roads, we sped along at almost 60 miles an hour while swerving, passing, hitting bumps full on, and listening to classical music.
This video gives you a snippet of what the four hour drive was like, and this wasn’t even the worst of it.
I was never happier to get out of a car alive.

Oh my gosh, I experienced a similar driving experience when I was in Africa. Basically, there are no passing lanes and drivers just wing it. I honestly had to close my eyes and put my head between my knees a couple times. This definitely brought back the memories…
I’ve heard Africa is very similar, if not worse!
Oh my gosh, that sounds terrifying! I’m not sure I could’ve handled it. I love all your tall tales posts, by the way!
Thank you! I have a lot of fun writing them.
Wow – crazy driving!!!
It really was!
I can not believe your driver passed that truck !!!! SCARY!
It was insane out there! With all the swerving, it was good I was sitting in the front otherwise I would have been really carsick.
