My assistant principal and one of the math teachers both received a Fitbit over the holidays. I was in awe when they were showing me all the fun things it tracks today.
Since I wanted to jump on the wagon, but can’t commit to a Fitbit at the moment, I pulled out my trusty old pedometer and wore it to work Friday and today.
Here is what I learned: My days are not made equal.
Friday:
Monday:
Friday, I was running all over the building pulling kids to tell them their new intervention times. Today, I was in my classroom teaching said students.
I went through about a month-long phase in college where I made sure I hit 10,000 steps. Honestly, it was tough! 10,000 steps is no joke, especially if you do a workout on top of that. Right now, 4,000 steps at work alone might be more reasonable for me, but I would literally have to walk laps around my little classroom to make it happen. Hmmm…challenge accepted.
RQ: Have you ever worn a pedometer? Do you have Fitbit? What is your opinion on such devices?

I went through several pedometers over the years & find it helps me to see just how some days I can feel exhausted and some days don’t. It is wild how much you can do without realizing you are doing it. When I track it, I push myself to do more. I have the old FitBit Ultra & love it. Thought I was going to have to replace it but the customer service there were great! Turns out the cord used to charge was bad not the unit and they quickly sent me a new cord. It does seem like an expensive pedometer, but if you can afford it I definitely recommend it.
That’s great that they were helpful and it wasn’t the whole device that needed replacing.
I’m not into the Fitbit. I know lots of people who are! My BFF received one for her birthday and loves it!! But I guess the same goes for running devices. Some people are into the Garmins (like me!) and some would prefer an app on their phone! To each their own! However, it is fun to read all about the new gadgets and what people think of them! 🙂
My problem is I think I would be way to competitive with myself. But it would be fun to try for a while!
I used to have a Fitbit One but I got bored with it really fast. Actually, it’s for sale if someone wants it lol… I liked seeing the steps I was taking but it never inspired me to walk more. Seeing my sleeping habits was cool tho, as was the silent vibrating alarm.
Did it make you nervous/uncomfortable to wear it all the time? I like to “strip” when I get home and especially for sleep.
Nope, not really. I barely noticed it!
Did you sell it yet? How much are you asking for it?
Haven’t sold it yet… And not sure…
I used to wear a pedometer a lot.
I just got a FitBitForce (I wrote about it a couple weeks ago) and honestly, I think it is just an expensive pedometer. And I rarely get 10,000 steps – I’ve got to work on that!!!
Interesting take on it. I like the pedometer part of it just because it’s so interesting. I actually didn’t wear mine to work today and I missed it! I was looking forward to checking my steps at the end of the day.
I bought a fitbit with a Christmas gift card. I love it! Turns out I walk about 2.5 miles a day at work…around and around the classroom and back and forth from the water cooler. And I still don’t come close to 10,000 steps without a workout.
10,000 is not easy! If you can’t do it with all the classroom walking, especially on a standardized test day, then there is no hope for the rest of us.
Fun! My cousin wears something on her wrist (one of those gadgets) and has certain goals each day. They vary, but she says some nights she is up late on her elliptical (still counts as steps) watching Breaking Bad. That obsession does not make me want a device, though I am starting to consider watching Breaking Bad!
Definitely watch Breaking Bad! I was into it the first season, missed a bunch, and then was riveted the last season. I have to go back and rewatch everything on Netflix.
The Fitbit is so cool… I haven’t ever used a pedometer. Do you count your runs as steps?
No, I count the runs separately. I just wore it work, not around the house or for errands.
I tested the Geopalz pedometer and found that inexpensive device very consistent and accurate, but do not use it. I don’t really like all these number devices. As a surgeon, I am aware of the art and science of medicine. In my opinion, we are losing the art! Numbers are in the science area. I just do it and modify as to how I am, not on what artificial and often inaccurate numbers tell me.
That is a way to do it also. Some people are numbers people and like to track everything they do. I enjoy tracking for a little while, but eventually go back to how I feel.
