Rob and the kids top their bowls with sliced strawberries and bananas while I opt for smoothies or breakfast burritos.
Oddly enough, the only time Cheerios appeal to me is when I am pregnant. I am pretty sure my sister in law knew I was pregnant with William before we told anyone because I ate a giant bowl of Cheerios with sliced bananas at three in the afternoon when she was visiting.
It is nothing against Cheerios, I just do not think about them as my go to breakfast option.
I digress. This post is not about Cheerios (though I should write one featuring how Rob and the kids eat them). This post is about Muesli.
As I was walking down the empty cereal aisle a few weeks ago looking for something more shelf stable than my usual smoothie ingredients in preparation for all the social distancing, the only cereals available were a granola that had 17 grams of added sugar per serving, or a store brand Muesli with much less.
I opted for the Muesli. I have memories of my mom eating Muesli for breakfast and I was always curious as to how she could possibly eat it while simultaneously thinking it looked rather regal. Almost wise. A cereal that had so much more to it than just a snap, crackle, and pop.
Into the cart it went.
Since I am still tired of eating eggs because of how many I ate during my bout with gestational diabetes, I managed to polish off the box of Muesli in about four days.
As I threw the empty box into the recycling, it hit me that I could easily make my own simple homemade Muesli with ingredients I already had and just adding in both corn flakes and bran flakes.
This Muesli recipe is easy, so you can quickly mix up a batch at the start of the week and store it for a few days. I managed to devour this batch of sweet and crunchy goodness in just a few days as a small bowl wandered into my pre-bed snack habit.
Right after I snapped these photos, Zoey and William wandered over for a bite. Thank goodness they had just eaten breakfast, otherwise the whole batch would not have stood even the slightest chance of making it through the day. The sweetness of the dates and raisins combined with the crunch of the cornflakes, had them both all in.
I prefer the Made in Nature dates to other brands. The dates are all in good shape and easy to use in recipes.
If you are a Raisin Bran eater, I urge you to give this Muesli a try. You get the same sweet crunch and much less added sugar.
Add some almond milk to this super simple homemade Muesli mix and you have a tasty breakfast (or midnight snack) on your hands.
Ingredients
- 3 cups cornflakes
- 3 cups bran flakes
- 1 cup almonds
- 1 cup old fashioned oats
- 1 cup dates
- 1 cup raisins
- 2 tablespoons chia seeds
- Almond Milk to taste
Directions
- Add cornflakes and bran flakes to a large bowl or air tight container.
- Chop almonds in food processor until roughly chopped. Add to cornflakes and bran flakes.
- Chop dates in food processor. This takes about 3 minutes of processing to get them to be small, quarter inch chunks. Add to cornflakes and bran flakes.
- Add oats, raisins, and chia seeds to the rest of the ingredients and toss together.
- Fill a regular bowl and add almond milk to taste.
This sweet and crunchy super simple homemade Muesli recipe is kid-friendly and uses ingredients you already have in your pantry. An easy breakfast for sure!
We eat a lot of Cheerios.
Let me rephrase. Rob and the kids eat a lot of Cheerios.
To the point that whenever Cheerios go on sale at Costco, we always buy the five item limit. That amounts to 10 boxes of Cheerios. My basement is guaranteed to have at least one box of Cheerios in it at all times.
As is the pantry next to the fridge. As is the top of the fridge. As is behind the avocados and bananas sitting on the counter most of the time.
The love is real.
