While studying to become a personal trainer, I learned a great deal about the human body, especially the chapter on over and under active muscles.
Even with all this knowledge, I felt like something was missing. While the program touched a bit on the mental side of fitness, I didn’t feel like it went in depth enough to the non-physical aspects of health. That’s what spurred me to get my Health Coach certification.
Our habits, our mentality, our true goals. All of these things are so important when it comes to improving our health and fitness that it makes squeezing in a workout is only half the battle to reaching your goals.
For that reason, the Pre-Summer Burn, and the past few Burns, incorporates a Health Journal. This journal includes daily prompts and worksheets (so you can print it and write all over it) to encourage you to reflect on your goals, supports, barriers and successes. A few questions from the journal include:
- What encouragements have you been given by others and what encouragements have you given to others?
- Which aspects of your “diet’ or self-imposed restrictions and rules are sustainable and unsustainable in your daily life?
- What strategies can you use and preparations can you do to overcome negatives, obstacles, and barriers?
It’s easy to get a workout in. It’s another thing entirely to spend a few minutes each day really grappling with questions like the three listed above. It takes honesty, reflection, and a clear picture of where you want to be. But, it is in this space that magic happens. It’s in this space of honesty with yourself and a true desire to improve that you’re able to really strive for those goals and be more successful than you thought possible.
It is also in this space that I am finding my happy place of coaching. It’s not just physical fitness, it’s not just running, but it is working with the whole person: mind, body, emotion, and lifestyle. I find it fascinating, challenging, and exciting all at once.
