Skip the standard, “Fine,” answer when you ask your child how her day at school was. Instead, use these specific 12 family conversation starters for meaningful daily chats that no one will roll their eyes at.

It broke my heart when Zoey walked into her first full day of Kindergarten.

My little 5.5 pound side-kick was nervously happy to be going to school – People! Learning! Independence! – and I was in tears.

Our chatty, curious lady was no longer with us for half the day. I no longer knew everything she did during the day, how her emotions were, who she spoke to, what she learned, and what questions she asked.

I honestly felt like I was losing my right hand girl and a friend during my days.

Why You Need Conversation Starters

Having been a teacher for 11 years, I know just how much goes on during a school day for your student. When they come home and give you the standard answer of, “Fine,” to you asking how their day was, there is so much more to it.

Inherently, I know you realize this. With our busy schedules, finding the right words to get your child talking is hard. Especially when your child is still processing her day herself.

To help get both your school aged child and yourself sharing more about your days with each other, use these 12 family conversation starters for meaingful daily chats.

When To Use These Conversation Starters

Whether you use them at dinner around the table to spark some conversation, or go through a few in the car while you head to an afternoon activity, your child will so appreciate having something specific to answer rather than a general, “What did you learn today?”

These family conversation starers also give you the opportunity to share about your own day, something your child will love hearing about.
