I was scheduling my next meeting with one of my clients and our conversation naturally veered toward her family’s eating habits. As we included more people in the conversation who were near us, one of the nearby women stated, “I am going to die surrounded by foods I love.”

She was not talking about fresh fruit and vegetables.

As she expanded, she rationalized that life is too short to deny herself foods she enjoys, so she is just going to eat what she wants, when she wants.

After getting over my initial frustration of how dismissive we as a society can be about our health, I started to feel bad for this woman’s family. As a result of her choosing to eat whatever she wants, whenever she wants, she is being selfish towards her family’s needs.

Why Your Bad Eating HabitsAre Selfish

Let me explain.

By disregarding your health and the nutritional value of the food you eat, you are going to get sick. Ultimately, your poor eating habits are going to lead to more body fat, clogged arteries, a weakened immune system, and low energy levels. These, in turn, lead to more serious health issues like diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, constant illness, and breathing issues. Once you are diagnosed with these health issues, who is going to be the one to take care of you?

Your spouse. Your children. Your extended family. Your friends.

Why Your Bad Eating Habits Are Selfish

Essentially, by not taking care of yourself in the most basic of levels (eating healthy foods), you are telling those around you that you have such little regard for their happiness and freedom of life, that you are willing to let them take care of you when you end up with these medical problems. I say “when” because it will happen. It is not a matter of if.

Sure, some of those unhealthy foods that you love may be delicious, but why would you continue to eat them, without moderation, knowing what you are going to have to put your family through? If you are not willing to change your eating habits and lifestyle for yourself, then do it for your family.

I want you to know that you can still eat foods you love. You can eat them in moderation and still be healthy. Not only that, but over time, you can learn to love more healthy foods as well. Yes, it takes work and it takes time, but you will get there. You will realize how much better your body feels, how many less doctor visits you make, and how much more energy you have when you fuel your body with fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. Over time, you will look back on where you were and wonder why you didn’t change your habits sooner. Not just for your family, but for yourself.
