During our trip to Japan, Rob and I ate a serious amount of delicious things.
We were so thrilled to be in a place where we didn’t have to worry about how long the meat had been sitting out, or if the cook had washed their hands after using the bathroom, that we didn’t hold back.
As terrible as it sounds, the best meal we had while in Japan turned out to be sushi from a grocery store.
The front desk man at the hostel tipped us off that after 4 hours, the sushi packs go on sale for half price. He also warned us not to be late, since they fly off the shelves as soon as they are marked down.
With some strawberries and crusty bread, we loaded up on sushi. The sushi was the freshest I have ever had. I still think about it and compare every piece of sushi I’ve had since to it!
This ended up being our meal two nights in a row, it was that good! Even better than the sushi bar we went to in Tokyo.

I like California sushi – does that count??
It does to me! I love California sushi too!
Sushi and strawberries sounds amazing. I love sushi but am always embarrassed when I go out because I can’t eat with chopsticks. And now I’m embarrassed that I admitted that…
That’s not embarrassing! It’s definitely something that takes a lot of practice. Even then I find it frustrating at times. Rice and chopsticks is ridiculous.
I’ve only ever had sushi once in New Orleans when I was with a friend who could order it for me!
I usually just order rolls because I don’t really know what anything else is.
Hi! Just found your blog, I’m a runner and teacher living in Denver as well 🙂 It’ll be fun to read about your adventures!
I absolutely love sushi, but I’m pretty picky about what I kind I eat. My favorite place is Sushi Den in Denver. Have you been there?
Hey Jillian! Welcome! What grade/subject do you teach? I am high school Literacy Intervention but taught MS for 4 years.
I will have to check out Sushi Den! My husband and I only moved here in July, so we haven’t explored a ton yet.
Awesome, I do literacy intervention too! I teach K-5.
You should definitely check out Sushi Den, I highly recommend it! It’s in the Platte Park neighborhood, which is close to Wash Park.
I have never had sushi. I honestly don’t know if I would like it or if the texture would turn me off. I am totally opened to trying new things so I know sometime in my lifetime I will try it!
Glad to hear you found really good sushi! That’s awesome 🙂
You have to try it. Go with someone who knows what to order and you won’t be disappointed.
