You know that quote, “When it rains, it pours”? Or how about, “Bad things happen in threes”?
Well they can both be applied to this past week.
1. Rob was really sick all week. Like, can’t stand up or go to work for three days sick.
2. The company who delivers our water has just refused to show up for the last 5 days, forcing us to buy 5 liter jugs at the same cost as the 21 liter jugs that we are supposed to have delivered.
3. Our internet has not been working since Thursday due to a faulty modem that our landlord will replace, “at some time.” (This should explain the lack of posting.)
Unfortunately, Rob was not up to travel to Cambodia. We had to cancel our tickets and forfeit our entrance to the Angkor Wat Half Marathon. Even though we didn’t get to go, I woke up super early on Saturday morning to run a half anyway. I figured I had done all the training, put in all those miles, I might as well see what I can do.
I made it 10.01 miles in about 1:36:24 before I called it quits. My left knee had a sharp pain and then my back started to have a sharp pain from overcompensating for my knee. Sigh.
I also struggled finding motivation for those last three miles since I have about a 1 mile radius of an area I can run. The thought of making another loop, or weaving through the streets yet again, just made me want to stop. It is nice to know that the training I did paid off though. Plus, my mom sent me some new running gear! I can’t wait to try it out!
Starting on Saturday, Rob and I will be headed off for a three-week tour of Vietnam for our Christmas vacation! Since I am unsure of how much working out I will be able to do, and since gyms are not a common thing here, I created a list of moves to complete over the next 20 days. All the moves can be done without equipment and don’t require a ton of time so I can focus on sightseeing.
If you’re traveling a lot this holiday season, this might be a good option for you as well. I was trying to think of a way to do simple moves in the hotel room before the day started and after it ended. We’ll see how it goes!

Brooke! I LOVE your blog! And your sassy new running gear! No, seriously, I find a lot of blogs that I like because I just really like blogs in general, but I think it’s so cool that you are teaching halfway across the world. I taught for one year (last year), and it was the most difficult experience of my life. Rewarding, but difficult. I admire you so much, and I look forward to reading more of your adventures.
Now to your questions, it is SO hard to stay fit while traveling. I do the best when I try to walk everywhere (as long as the whether allows). And then I also really like to do 1000-rep workouts on vacation because you can get creative with them and do them anywhere. Just Google it and you’ll find examples.
Enjoy your holidays traveling!
Thanks for visiting! Teaching is definitely not for the faint of heart. I admire anyone who gives it a try. I am going to have to look of these 1000 rep workouts. It sounds right up my alley.
So bummed about your race! Hope Rob is feeling better. Have an AMAZING vacation!
Thanks, Amanda. Rob is back to normal and we leave tomorrow!
