I do not think anyone would argue that there are benefits to working out and staying fit. The problem usually comes with either a lack of motivation or a lack of time. There are only so many hours in the day, and sometimes, there are other things that take priority. 

While you may have the motivation and the desire to stay fit, you just cannot see yourself budgeting the time for an hour and a half workout every day. The great thing is that you do not have to. 

With the right fitness resources and game plan, you will be able to stay fit without sacrificing family time. In fact, some of these ways to stay fit are going to allow for even more family time.

Play with the Kids in the Backyard

If you have kids, you know how much energy they can have. Well, why not do a two for one? Try playing with your kids in the backyard to help them burn off some of that energy, while at the same time using it as a way to stay fit. This can be done a million different ways, as well.

You could play a sport, a traditional game like tag, or simply choose one of these activities. You could even think up workout-inspired games to play. It really is up to you to be as creative as you would like! Before you know it, you will have gotten a great workout, and you will also have been able to play with your kids. 

Workout During Lunch or Snack Time

If you have kids that are able to feed themselves, a great time to workout could be during their lunch or snack time. Whether up in their high chair or at the kitchen table, they will be able to enjoy one of their favorite snacks or a tasty lunch, and you will be able to get in a quick 20-minute workout. 

You can set up a few pieces of home exercise equipment and get in a workout in your living room. With a yoga mat, a couple of resistance bands, and some dumbbells, there is not much you cannot do right in the middle of your living room. 

You might even consider putting one of their favorite books or toys in front of them as well. This will allow you to possibly extend your workout as they are engaged with reading or playing after they finish their food. 

Go for A Bike Ride

This one is going to depend on the age of your children, but if you have older kids, take them on a bike ride. Find a park or trail to make sure that everyone is safe, but get the bikes out and go for a ride. You will be able to get out of the house, get some fitness in (for everyone), and enjoy the thrill of riding bikes.

If you have younger kids that may not be able to keep up with you, try going for a run while they bike beside you. This will allow you to get a workout in, and also make sure that they are staying safe next to you. 

Encourage Your Kids to Join You

I was at the beach the other week, and I saw a dad working out with his probably 10-year-old daughter. He was primarily doing the workout, but he was also teaching her and encouraging her to try the different exercises as well. He was able to get his workout in, she was having fun learning new things, and both of them were enjoying spending time together. 

There is no reason why you cannot do the same thing with your kids as one of the ways to stay fit without sacrificing family time. Even if your kids are not exactly “thrilled” to join, still encourage them to try. You will not only be able to spend quality time with them, but you will start a pattern of healthy habits that will hopefully stick with them. As a parent, you want to develop your kids to be successful in life, and this is a great way to help do that.

When your kids are younger, though, keep them away from actual weights. Doing bodyweight exercises are an excellent way to include them while making sure that they are staying safe. 

Maximize Your Gym Time

Sometimes, there is just no replacement for the gym. You have all of your exercise equipment and weights right there ready to go. So if you do feel that the gym is an absolute must, do your best to maximize your time there. If done the right way, you do not need to spend hours and hours at the gym to get in a great workout. 

Sit down and game plan your workouts so that you can get in and out. Try doing a circuit workout, a 30-minute fitness class, superset your exercises, etc. There are a lot of excellent workout plans out there that will allow you to continue to get in better shape, without taking up a large chunk of your day.

When it comes to life, certain areas should take priority over everything else. One of these areas is family time and being able to spend time with the ones that you love. This does not mean that fitness is not important; it just means that the right balance needs to be found. Your fitness journey is unique and does not need to be a copy of what anyone else is doing.
