As the weather changes and the glow of summer fades before we move into the holiday season rush, our health most often takes a backseat as we start to get cozy and hunker down for the cold winter ahead. The food changes from summery fresh salads to warming soups, chilis, and bakes. The days slowly start to get shorter as we head to bed earlier and struggle to wake up on time.
I love being outside this time of year regardless of those changes. The fall colors, the crisp weather, the crunchy leaves. It all gives me even more of an excuse to breathe in the fresh air on long walks and runs and reintroduce fall recipes.
I would love for you to join me in my love of the fall changes while maintaining our health. This October, I am hosting a free health and fitness program called Walktober. This program combines all of my favorite things: community, teams, movement, challenges, eating well, and enjoying the fall weather and foods as much as possible.
Since I absolutely adore the community building that fitness programs can offer, Walktober will be done in teams! Not only will you have a team of 3 other people supporting you, but you will have your very own health coach by your virtual side. Teams are ideal as you all work toward a common goal to offer support, accountability, and a way to share celebrations.
So, let’s get into the logistics and FAQ’s of Walktober!
In teams of 4, you will combine forces to earn as many points as possible over the 31 days of the month.

How does Walktober work?
Each day, your team will report their totals, or events, to me via the Facebook group. I will add these totals to a shared Google Spreadsheet you can use to check your stats throughout Walktober. You will also check in through the Facebook group with daily mindset and accountability questions.
Walktober is completely free!
How do I form a team?
Get your family, friends, and coworkers involved! You can register as a team or as an individual to be put on a team. Think about those people you walk with, talk about fitness with, or those you want to be more active. Team members do not have to be in the same location! You can register your team using the form at the bottom of this page or just head over to the form from this link.
How can a team earn points?
Points accumulate in three ways:
1. Completing miles. Each mile gets you 1 point for your team. Fitbit Lovers (affiliate link!) can check in with mileage or steps. We will be using the average conversion of 2,000 steps equaling 1 mile.
2. Completing the weekly challenges related to hydration and food.
3. Completing a strength workout. For those of you who are focusing on strengthening, conditioning, and core, your regular lifting workouts can earn you 2 points each. This is in addition to whatever mileage or step count you accumulate.
What are the weekly challenges?
Each week, there is a specific focus on food. While the basis of Walktober is movement, having time to focus on food provides a more well-rounded program as a way to improve your health and set new habits in your daily life. You can earn points for each food-related challenge you complete per day.
Week 1: Hydration. For each day you hit your personalized water goal, you earn 1 point for your team.
Week 2: Include a vegetable in each meal. For every meal (and snack!) that has a vegetable, you earn 1 point for your team.
Week 3: Cook/Prepare your own meals. Even if you have to pack your lunch, for each meal you cook yourself, you earn 1 point for your team.
Week 4: Eat clean. This is the toughest of the weekly challenges. For every meal and snack that contains no processed foods, you earn 1 point for your team.
Even though you have a whole team to keep you accountable, prizes are always fun for that extra motivation.
