It seems to be the plight of every working person, that getting home to cook a meal after a full work day seems nearly impossible. In fact, just a few days ago, when I asked a client what she was planning for her dinners for the week, she responded with, “I get home too late to cook dinner, so I was just going to pick something up on my way home.”

While I completely understand this sentiment, and it is possible to make healthy fast food choices, there are a few things you can do to ensure you’re getting some quality food into your system (and saving money by not always picking something up).

1. Meal Prep. Do as much as you can when you have time! Even if it’s only 15 extra minutes, you can do quite a lot.

2. Utilize Your Freezer. With so many frozen vegetables, fruits, and meals, there is no reason you can’t have a healthy meal in little time. The only caveat to those frozen meals is to check the sodium labels. The vast majority of those pack a serious sodium punch.

3. Batch Cook. If you decide to make a lasagna, casserole, chili, soup, etc., make an extra one or two that you can store in the freezer for those busy nights. An even better way to do this is store your extra meal in smaller portion sizes, that way you are heating up only what you will eat and not wasting anything.

4.Make a Dinner Smoothie! A quick and nutritious meal in a glass that you can make taste delicious with basically anything you have in the fridge and pantry.

5. Make Your Other Meals and Snacks High Quality. If you know that there is no way you’re going to be home for any kind of dinner, or by the time you get home you’ll be too tired to even want to eat, be sure you’re getting enough calories throughout the rest of your day. This means you have a bit of protein, healthy fat, and quality carbs in breakfast, lunch, and snacks. By doing this, you’re ensuring that you’re not depriving your body of its much needed nutrients.

6. Have Salsa. A half cup of salsa counts as a full serving of fruits or vegetables. It’s a win win!
