When it comes to our health and fitness, there are all these things we know we “should” do. Walk 10,000 steps per day, lift weights, eat fresh foods, make your own meals, drink water. The list of “shoulds” seems endless.

And that’s fine, if this list of things excites and inspires you. Doing these things won’t seem like a burden then. However, these “shoulds” become “damn near impossibles” if you are simply tolerating and putting up with them, thus zapping all the enjoyment from a healthy lifestyle.

I want you to make a list of each: things that excite and inspire you versus things that you’re putting up with and tolerating. To fine-tune your list, categorize it into food, fitness, and mentality. For anything that excites you, determine how you can incorporate more of it into your life. For things you’re tolerating, I want you to determine how you rework them to make them feel like less of a burden and hopefully get more enjoyment out of them.

For example, if you’re inspired by your coworker who has completed 58 ClassPasses since January 1st, praise her and then start a little competition either together or on your own.

If you get excited about trying a new recipe, then make a commitment to do so at least once a week with your spouse.

Now, if you’re tolerating cooking just about every night but you really can’t stand it, rework it by trying some pre-packaged items like chopped veggie stir fry kits and pre-mixed salads, test out a meal delivery service like Sun Basket, or do some meal prep for weekly dinners on weekends.

If you’re putting up with your friends’ comments when you go out to eat because you ordered the fish tacos with vodka soda and they opted for the double bacon cheeseburger, extra fries, and a margarita, change it by reminding them that you’re doing this for your health. Don’t just take their comments. Who knows, they may even ask you about what you’re doing and how they can start too!

The point is that the majority of your health and fitness should excite and inspire you, rather than be a bunch of things you have to tolerate and get through. If you’re just tolerating, then you’re not setting yourself up for a long-term lifestyle, but a short fix that you can’t wait to come to an end.

Holding on for dear life

This method of determining your excitements versus tolerations can apply to other aspects of your life as well, not just food and fitness. Use it to consider your job, your home life, and your future plans. There is always room to grow and improve where you’re not happy!
