Water. Some people love it. Some people hate it. Honestly, I think I’ve met more people who hate it and just can’t seem to drink it than I have those who drink it almost exclusively (Rob being one of those exclusive people).
Whatever your current relationship with water, you need to drink it. And most likely you need to drink more of it than you currently are.
How do you know how much to drink? The rule of thumb is to guzzle half your bodyweight in ounces. So, at 160 pounds, I need 80 ounces of water per day before I workout or add extra movement.
What are some ways you can drink more water if it’s just not your thing? I’m so glad you asked! Here are a few of my favorite tricks:
Carry a reusable water bottle with you wherever you go. Determine how many refills you need to hit your daily goal.
Label your water bottle with lines and times you need to drink it by. There are even pre-labeled bottles out there you can buy!
Add cucumber slices, lemon, mint, or strawberries to flavor it.
Download an app to help keep track. Waterlogged and Daily Water are free!
Set an alarm to go off every hour as a reminder to get your water in.
Drink a glass of water before you eat.
I could tout the benefits of staying hydrated, but I think you probably already know them. And if you don’t, a quick google search will tell you. What I will tout is how much more energized you will feel without even realizing you were feeling lethargic!
You know how plants need a ridiculous amount of water? Well, you’re no different! (Yes, this was my shameless plug to show you the insane vegetable garden action we have going on. Don’t judge, it’s my first one.)
As you aim to get the water you need, keep in mind that your body is not used to that amount of liquid. You might feel a bit bloated for a week or two, but keep drinking and your body will start to even out (and possibly drop a pound or two).

Yes !!! It is so hard to drink the recommended amount a day, but flavouring definitely helps I find, and a reminder. I think once you get into the routine it becomes easier but damn, it really is hard to start. hehe 😀
So true! I keep telling my clients they have to push through those first few days of feeling uncomfortable. Not easy, but definitely worth it.
I’m a water fan and drink it almost exclusively (except for my coffee… which is mostly water, too!). Even with that being all that I drink I’m certain that at 7,000 feet in the desert, running as much as I do, I don’t drink enough. Thanks for the tips!
I’m on a seltzer water kick right now. La Croix is nothing but water and it’s delicious.
We love those (or the Kroger brand) and are drinking them instead of diet coke. I’m so glad I switched!
