Last week, the wonderful Community Manager, Jonathan, at ENERGYbits sent me a sample of their product to try. I have been seeing ENERGYbits take off all over my twitter newsfeed and love how sincerely involved the company is in all of the athletic endeavors of its followers.
The first thing that struck me when I opened the container was, wow they are green! The second thing was, they smell like fish food.
As they should! ENERGYbits are made with spiralina algae. So, basically fish food. Here are a few other things to note about these little green tabs of energy:
- They have the highest concentration of protein in the world. 64%!
- Olympians have been using them for 50 years or so.
- The spiraling algae, the bit’s one ingredient, is 100% organically grown.
- There is no sugar, caffeine, or chemicals in them.
- They can be used to curb your hunger.
Since I don’t like to eat just before I workout, but then suffer stomach pains afterwards until I get something in my body, I took a handful of ENERGYbits before 10-mile morning run.
Normally around mile 6, I start to get a bit mentally fatigued. But this time, I can honestly say, that once I hit the 10 mile mark, I actually felt like I could keep going. Mentally, I was alert and ready. Physically, my ankle was yelling (but that has nothing to do with the bits).
The best part was that even though I hadn’t had breakfast, just one serving of bits (30 tabs), I wasn’t starving when I finished. I wasn’t even that hungry for about 30-40 minutes after, which NEVER happens. Usually I have to eat right away so I don’t gnaw my arm off.
All in all, I was seriously impressed with these little guys. One downside: I’m a bit of a burp-y runner and the fishiness of the bits was definitely noticeable, not bad, but was there.

Interesting… Thanks for sharing your honest opinion about this. I’d love to give them a try (though I get nervous about trying new things before a long run). I have lots of questions ~ are they strictly a pre-run food? What is the pricing like? I could go on and on! I think I’d like to see if they keep me from bonking (did you fuel during your 10 miler at all or only use the bits beforehand?)!
Questions are good! They are not strictly a pre-run food, you can use them during your run too. They are pricey initially, about $115 for 1,000 bits. A serving is 30 bits. During my 10-miler, I had my usual gu at mile 4. I normally have another around mile 8-9, but didn’t feel the need. They are worth a try at the least!
I am so curious about energybits! I would use them by incorporating them throughout the day! I’m one of those people that wakes up, and is on the go from one thing to the next without stopping until I’m ready to hit the hay. I am a recent former collegiate volleyball player trying to maintain my fitness, a residential treatment counselor to high-risk teen girls, an intern to an orthopedic surgeon, all the while trying to study for my boards for my nursing license. I’m very used to a hectic schedule, and despite trying to lead a healthy lifestyle, find that I sometimes need that boost of energy, not only for my workouts, but for my daily life in general!
Wow! You are one busy woman! How do you keep your energy up now?
I have been learning more about these through blogs! I would like to try them to see if they would work for me! I always start to feel tired around mile 4/5 and need a pick me up. It would be great to see how long I could go using them!
I only used them as pre-run, but I think they would be just as effective mid-run.
