Welcome to the first installment of Tall Tales Tuesday! If you want to get up to speed on what Tall Tales Tuesday is all about, check out this post.

Drinking in South East Asia is just kind of what you do.

Tigers in Hanoi

When beer is literally cheaper (50 cents) than a bottle of a water, it’s the more logical option for budget-minded people.

Rice wine

One of our local haunts in Saigon, Happy Life, served up “buckets” in which you pick your liquor, a boastful 4 shots, and mixer. This was a whopping $2. (The plastic cup with the straw.)

Our version of a bucket

On our last trip of the year, a 2 week stint through Thailand, we spent 4 days on Koh Phi Phi, a beautiful island adjacent to where The Beach was filmed.

We stopped at an expat-popular spot for lunch after a morning boat trip to visit said adjacent island and saw that “buckets” were on the menu. For a deal.

Deal

Figuring they would be similar to the Happy Life drinks we had come to love, we ordered.

The waitress didn’t bat an eye as she set two literal sand toys, full of booze and a splash of coke, in front of us.

That's a legit sand toy

Oops.

Ridiculous

But this is Thailand, where taking alcohol out of a bar is not an issue. What we couldn’t finish, the waitress happily filled our empty water bottle with. Remember, we got a third one free. Like I said, a deal.

All 4 straws in use

After two days, we threw out the remaining half water bottle. We just couldn’t get through it.

Finished

Clearly, we can’t hang in Thailand.

RQ: Have you ever felt like you couldn’t “hang” somewhere? What would you have done if these sand pails arrived at your table?
