In leu of the regular Sunday lesson plan post, I wanted to share some exciting news with you all:

I have a new job! Well…sort of.

I’ve been a classroom teacher for 4 and a half years now. As much as I enjoy bonding with an entire class of students, I’ve been feeling like I want something more out of my teaching experience. Starting on Monday, I will be my school’s Reading Specialist!

You don’t get this kind of honesty out of kids you don’t know well. (My students in Phoenix during a “describe yourself with one word project”.)

This is a particularly thrilling achievement as I have spent the last two months trying to convince my colleagues that our students would benefit from the Reading Specialist skills I have. The discussions with teachers, meetings with admin, and reading tests (Thank you Rob for administering all of those. I couldn’t have done this without your help and countless, hair-pulling conversations.) have all shown a need for this type of thing.

The fruits of Rob’s labor…the not so great reading scores.

Instead of teaching 6 classes, I will only have 2, leaving my schedule open to work with teachers and have one-on-one intensive interventions with students. I do get to keep my classroom, which makes the transition easier for me, but a little tougher for the 4 classes that have to find their way to a different classroom with a different teacher.

My good ol’ classroom. Now going to be filled with one-on-one reading interventions. How to arrange it…hmmmm….

Today was spent planning my schedule for the week in order to maximize my time working with kids.

Scheduling is not for the faint of heart.

I am excited…and nervous. Time to put my money where my mouth is and prove I know what I’m doing. (Thank you masters degree in reading and 4 years working with struggling readers.) Here goes nothing.

Reader Question: Is there are Reading Specialist at your school? What are some suggestions, things you like, dislike…so I can do it the same or better?
